“
Bird watching came about in my life because of envy. Growing up as a woman in a
low-income household in India, in a conservative setting, I was kept away from the
exploring the outside world. Hence, when I began my journey as a photographer, I
always had an inkling to delve into realm of wildlife. I was envious of those who
walked on adventurous paths. So, as an entry point, birds seemed pretty accessible
to me. So, I went for it.
My first birdwalk was on a cloudy winter morning at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
in New York. It was a wonderful day, not because a fellow birder complimented
my silver puffer jacket, but because I was mesmerised by seagulls catching clams
and dropping them from a considerable height to break them for a meal.”
